Northampton County OKs $1.25M in grants to modest companies | Lehigh Valley Regional News

EASTON, Pa. – Northampton County Council authorised a complete of $1.25 million in COVID-19 aid grants to 96 small corporations at its Thursday assembly, following some scrutiny of a home-centered business enterprise and an additional stated as a self-utilized Uber/Lyft driver.

Councilwoman Margaret Ferraro explained she had looked up a cleaning enterprise and observed it listed an Allentown mailing tackle. To qualify for federal revenue allocated from the county’s $30.6 million in 2021 American Rescue Prepare money, a business will have to be in Northampton County and meet up with other requirements. Allentown is in Lehigh County.

Stephen Barron, director of finance, claimed the newest round of applicants — with some from out of the county and other individuals with incomplete paperwork — expected a whole lot of scrunity. In this case, he stated “Clear. Manage. Repeat” competent, because in the western area of the county, some structures have Allentown postal addresses but are not in Lehigh County.

Tara Zrinski questioned about a business enterprise determined as Joseph Moran of Easton, stated as a “self-used ridershare driver Uber/Lyft.” There are a great deal of Uber and Lyft motorists in the location, but only Moran was in line for a $15,000 grant.

Barron claimed the software was scrutinized and capable for the grant. He stated Moran has operated a driving company that extends beyond choosing up Uber and Lyft travellers. Tax returns proved that Moran was suitable.

Councilman Kerry Myers suggested that descriptions of grant recipients be recognized much better in the upcoming. Ron Heckman claimed applications are reviewed very carefully, but included, “I wouldn’t be stunned if something sneaks via now and then.”

The “gig economic climate,” where by people do the job side or temporary employment, presents a challenge to the committee of administration personnel and council members who overview programs, Heckman explained. The Higher Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce helps in the evaluations. County council has the remaining vote on grants.

The county has authorised five rounds of pandemic relief payments to smaller organizations this calendar year. By the time County Government Lamont McClure and council have dispensed all the aid prepared, about $27 million of federal money will have been dispersed to smaller businesses by the county in 2020 and 2021.

McClure mentioned last year’s grants from the federal CARES Act kept businesses alive, and the 2021 American Rescue Plan cash will help them thrive once more.
