Speak of a “vaccine war” amongst the European Union and the United Kingdom is thoroughly untrue, claims the EU’s ambassador to the United kingdom. João Vale de Almeida tells FRANCE 24 “our frequent enemy is the virus” and that the EU is however the most significant exporter of Covid-19 vaccines in the world, despite agreeing not long ago on a system to block vaccine exports in some instances. That system had prompted British International Minister Dominic Raab to accuse the European Union of “brinkmanship”.
But Ambassador Vale de Almeida insists that the Uk is on monitor to obtain its vaccination objectives and “that is excellent mainly because you’re only absolutely shielded if your neighbours are completely secured. So a success in the British isles is good for us”.
We also talk about the the latest violence in Northern Eire: “We [in the EU] are apprehensive about the violence, we condemned the violence, we appealed for the finish of the violence and we are next it quite attentively,” suggests the Ambassador.
Following a new unilateral transfer by the Uk government to increase the “grace period” for checks on selected items despatched from Good Britain to Northern Ireland, Ambassador Vale de Almeida says the EU is fully commited to acquiring functional remedies to challenges raised by the Northern Eire Protocol: “We have to have to find them in a consensual way with our British friends, not unilaterally as sometimes the British governing administration has opted for.”
The Ambassador brushes aside problems about the British federal government selecting not to give him total diplomatic position and immunity – the only administration in the earth to do so: “Our aim is on the high-quality of our partnership. I feel that even soon after divorce, the British isles and the EU have a great deal in common.”
With just about two months to go for European Union citizens resident in the United kingdom to register for “Settled Standing”, Ambassador Vale De Almeida appeals to all EU citizens to assure they have made the essential applications and admits that no person appreciates precisely how numerous persons are impacted: “Not all of them are registered in consulates, the United Kingdom has no official method of registration both. Our primary issue now is elderly persons, children and some groups of the population that are a minimal exterior of the mainstream and may well not be totally linked.”
Lastly, on the working day that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh was laid to rest, the Ambassador pays tribute on behalf of the European Union: “We sign up for our British close friends in mourning Prince Philip and wishing the best to the loved ones, in distinct to Her Majesty.”
